Metallica is an American band of metal formed in Los Angeles, California. Their releases include fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship, which placed them in place of one of the founding bands of the "Big Four" of thrash metal, along with Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. The band was formed in 1981, after James Hetfield respond to an advertisement that drummer Lars Ulrich placed in the local newspaper. In 2003, training began to consist of lead guitarist Kirk Hammett (who joined the band in 1983) and bassist Robert Trujillo (a member since 2003), as well as Hetfield and Ulrich. Before arriving at its current formation, the band had several members: lead guitarist Dave Mustaine (who later founded the Megadeth), and bassists Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted.
